Locals that are familiar with the history of New Orleans know that our great city was built in the swampy areas surrounding the Mississippi River on land that many believed would never be settled.  The continual spread of our city (and later suburban areas) into what used to be rural or swampy land has changed the entire landscape around metro New Orleans.
