The Hazards of Mosquito Bites

Anyone who has suffered at the hands of a mosquito knows their bites are annoying and itchy. But mosquitos are more dangerous than the innocuous, red bump on your skin would lead you to believe. Mosquitos are carriers of diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, Zika, Yellow Fever, West Nile Virus and, in this area, Encephalitis.

Steps to Control Your Mosquito Population

A professional will offer you the most comprehensive plan and solution to keep mosquitos off your property and away from your family. But there are steps that you can take in the meantime, to reduce the overall mosquito population.

1.     Remove Standing Water Sources: Mosquitos breed in and around standing water sources such as puddles, ponds and bird fountains. There are lots of unexpected places that water can accumulate, such as gardening equipment, tarps and garbage. (Mosquitoes can be found breeding in as little as a spoonful of water!) The first step towards eliminating mosquitos is to make your yard uninhabitable for water-loving pests. This process also includes regular maintenance for water installations such as pools, gutters and outdoor showers. Cleaning out water sources, or turning over buckets and empty planters, regularly will prevent mosquitos from settling in and laying their eggs.

You might notice large groups of small, flying insects that hover, but don’t bite. These are not mosquitoes. They are non-biting midges and you are witnessing a mating swarm. They are harmless, but might indicate that there is an area close by that can also support mosquito breeding.

2.     Install Screen Doors or Porch Windows: The best way to enjoy fresh air without the possibility of mosquitos is to install screen windows and doors. You get all the fresh air with none of the bugs! While this process prevents mosquitos from getting inside your home, it doesn’t affect the amount of mosquitos in your yard. You can also use screens to protect standing water sources, such as rain barrels.

3.     Outdoor Fans: Mosquitos can be quick, but they are relatively weak flyers. An outdoor fan, used in tandem with other pest control methods, can be an excellent addition to your mosquito prevention plan.

4.     Outdoor Lighting: You may notice the hazy cloud of mosquitos that flock to your outdoor lights every night. Thankfully, the lightbulb industry has come up with a solution to prevent insects from swarming your outdoor lights. They are called “bug lights” and they should attract fewer insects, as well as mosquitos.

5.     Prevent Direct Contact: There are plenty of ways that you can protect yourself against mosquitos, including the clothes you wear and the bug spray you use. Long sleeves and pants are a direct barrier against hungry mosquitos. Mosquito repellant offers an additional coat of protection against pest. Make sure to double check the ingredients used in your mosquito repellant. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends EPA-registered repellants that contain ingredients such as DEET, IR3535 and Picaridin.
